Follow Volunteers' Directions Updated 10-15-11

Runners, relay team runners will be on the same course you are running MOST OF THE TIME. However, near their exchange points they will be directed to take different routes. Do Not Follow relay runners. Marathon runners/walkers must stay on the main course or face disqualification. Relay runners will be wearing yellow bibs (numbers) and will have additional bibs identifying them as "RELAY" .

Start Times

8:30 AM for Marathon & Relay Team Runners
6:30 AM - Walkers

All participants should be at City Island (or their relay exchange point) at least 30 minutes before their start time.

Timing

A chip timing system will be in use and will serve as the Official Time. Clocks are displayed on the course for your convenience.

We will be using Disposable Chips donated by PA Runners. Two timing systems will be in use, one for the 26-milers and another for relay teams.Relay Teams wil NOT use disposable chips. Refer to Relay Team page. Please read signs and follow directions provided by volunteers.

Timing mats for 26-milers will be placed at the:

  • the start and finish lines;
  • in proximity to the 13 mile location.

Chip time for all mat locations will be available on this website's Results page and the PA Runners' website, following the race.

Official time for Boston Marathon Qualification will be Chip Time.

Visible mile markers will be placed at each mile and bright yellow and black arrows will be placed at key locations along the course to guide runners. Please look for the course signs, examples at left.

Split times will be called at multiple locations along the course. Time clocks are also placed at various locations on the course.

Parking

Parking on City Island is free, including the Parking Garage in the South Parking Lot. Link to City Island Marathon Map.

If needed, parking garages are also available at 3rd & Walnut Streets and 2nd & Chestnut Streets in Downtown Harrisburg. For additional parking information, see Parking Map.

Shuttle Service

Due to close proximity between the host hotel and the start and finish lines on City Island, there will be no shuttle service in 2011. The walk to City Island is approximately 1/2 mile from the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Please see Directions and/or Logistics pagse for additional information and links to maps.

Market St. Bridge Closes For Beginning of Race

All lanes from the East Shore (Downtown Harrisburg) to City Island on the Market Street Bridge will be closed for the start of the Marathon from approximately 8:20 AM to 8:40 AM.  All participants make sure you are on City Island by 8:10 AM to be ready for the start of the race.  The best vantage point for the beginning of the race for spectators is on the east, Downtown Harrisburg, side of the Market Street Bridge.

Necessities

Port a-Johns will be located at the start and finish areas. See course map for additional locations.

Water stations approximately every 2 1/2 miles, stocked with Crystal Springs water. After the halfway point, many stations will have Cytomax sports drink and gel.

First aid items will be available at water stations. Medical assistance team at the finish line and EMS at points along the course. Please report all emergencies on the course to the water stations.

Amenities

Post-race clothing. A clothing drop-off area is provided outside of the Carousel Pavilion on City Island. Runners can place a change of warm, dry clothing in a bag labeled with their race numbers at the drop-off. Once runners have completed the race, they can pick-up their bags of clothing. Race volunteers will manage the drop-off during the race. Please provide your own bag. Photo left is at the clothing bag pick-up.

The Harrisburg East Shore YMCA at Front & North Streets will be open to runners to shower and change from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bring your own towel.

Refreshments will be provided at the finish line; favorites include warm chicken broth, bagels, fruit, donuts, and hot chocolate. All cups used on the course and at the finish line will be composed of recycled materials. We are recycling Please Read. An aluminum space blanket will also be provided to each runner at the finish line.

Course Closure

Volunteers will be released from their stations based on a 13 minute pace; the finish line will close at 2:30 PM. We cannot guarantee that you will find water or food after the course is closed. If you do not think you can complete the course by 2:30, please ask a water station volunteer to arrange for an assistance vehicle to City Island (the finish line).

Awards Ceremony - Medals

Rolling Awards Ceremony in the Carousel Pavilion. We will try to present awards early so runners can return to their rooms or head home. Age group winners will receive awards based on finish times for their age groups. 2008 plaques shown at left.

All 26.2 mile finishers will receive a marathon medal at the finish line (New 2010 medal shown at left). Medals will not be awarded to relay team runners.
